Education is a basic human right and should be accessible for all children. However, according to UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, of the 7.1 million refugee children of school age, 3.7 million – more than a half – do not go to school.
All EU Member States – especially Mediterranean countries such as Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal, which have been experiencing massive influx of refugees during the last years – are facing the challenge of successfully integrating refugee children in their education systems. Assessing these children’s previous learning proves difficult in most cases, as many of them have no documentation of their previous school attainment and grades.
CIRCLE – “Inclusion of Refugee Children in Education” project aims at supporting the inclusion of refugee / migrant children in education and reducing their drop-out level, by creating innovative tools that will allow education professionals to effectively assess and validate their prior learning, enabling thus the continuity of learning of newly arrived refugee/migrant children.
In this framework, three booklets were created – for Primary, lower Post Primary and upper Post Primary pupils – aiming to help teachers and educators assess these children’s prior knowledge. The booklets are tailored to address the challenges and needs faced by migrant and refugee children, such as minimal native and/or English language skills, cultural differences and psychological traumas.
The booklets contain a number of exercises in arithmetic, generic sciences, geometry, algebra, physics, geography, ICT, statistics and English, as well as tips for the entry interviews with newly arrived students and their families.
